A Tribute from Maria Osende

It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of the passing of Enrique “El Henry” Rojo’s on January 29, 2022. Along with Maria Osende, Enrique was one of the founders of the Maria Osende Flamenco Company and he performed extensively in many company shows in Halifax and around the province. He also performed at the Atlantic Flamenco Festival and the Flamenco Nights Performance Series.

A true renaissance man, Enrique was an incredible creative and multi-talented artist. Always interested, always interesting. He never lost his curiosity for life, society, politics, art, language and history. He truly lived life his way.  We were so lucky to have him and flamenco in Nova Scotia would not be where it is today, if it wasn’t for him.

Our deepest condolences go to his family and friends. We will never forget you. RIP 🖤 Enrique

Singer, guitarist, visual artist, teacher, friend, renaissance man

A multi-talented artist, Enrique began singing as a child in Argentina. Thus began a life-long love affair with Latin-American music and, through this, an exploration of his Spanish roots in flamenco.

Rojo travelled to Spain to further his flamenco studies at the Fundación Cristina Heeren de Arte Flamenco in Seville, and spent time exploring Madrid’s local flamenco scene. Singing for the Maria Osende Flamenco Co. between 2004 and 2012, el Henry’s deeply emotional voice contained the essence of flamenco. He was instrumental in developing our flamenco community in Halifax and he will be deeply missed
