Maria Osende: A Maestra’s Dance Journey

Born in Madrid, Spain, Maria Osende began dancing at a young age, earning High Honors in classical ballet at the Conservatorio de Danza de Madrid under Julia Estevez. Her flamenco foundation was shaped at the Centro de Arte Flamenco Amor de Dios and the School of American Ballet in New York City, supported by a Fulbright Scholarship.

At 19, Maria launched her professional career with Spain’s Compañía Nacional de Danza, later joining Berlin Ballet (Germany) as a soloist for a decade. She explored classical and contemporary dance, which she has at times blended with flamenco, while at other times remaining true to its roots. In 2003, she settled in Halifax, Canada, where her flamenco journey deepened and flourished.

Artistic Vision

Maria has created over 30 works through Atlantic Flamenco, blending tradition with innovation. Her latest creation, Between Shores, was a resounding success, performed to sold-out audiences. Her repertoire spans full-length productions, solos, and commissioned pieces, all rooted in flamenco’s expressive power.

She received the Established Artist Recognition Award from Arts Nova Scotia and the Creative Nova Scotia Leadership Council.

Educator & Mentor

Maria is the founder of Osende Dance Arts, the only flamenco school in Atlantic Canada. She’s a passionate teacher and mentor, pioneering flamenco education through programs like the Guitarra Flamenca Mentorship and Conecta Mentorship, both in partnership with her school and Atlantic Flamenco.

Atlantic Flamenco

In 2007, Maria founded Atlantic Flamenco, transforming Halifax into a vibrant flamenco hub. Her leadership has brought world-class artists such as Rafael Campallo, Maria Moreno, Joaquin Grilo, fellow Canadian artists, and other guests from Spain to Halifax, Nova Scotia.

She’s the visionary behind the Atlantic Flamenco Festival, Flamenco Nights, FUSE Dance Festival, Seville’s April Fair in Halifax, and more.
