About Flamenco
Flamenco is an evolving art form, continuously influenced by new cultures and genres. Between Shores pushes the boundaries of traditional flamenco, fostering its growth in a contemporary, multicultural Canadian context.
Flamenco, born from centuries of cultural blending in Spain, incorporates influences from Spanish, Moorish, Middle Eastern, Jewish, and African traditions. Today, it thrives worldwide, including here in Nova Scotia. Local dancers and musicians embrace flamenco as a powerful means of self-expression, bridging diverse backgrounds through shared artistic passion. Just like Canada, flamenco celebrates diversity, offering a common language that transcends cultural differences.
BETWEEN SHORES – Tales Woven Within Flamenco
*Between Shores* explores the deep connections between Canada and Spain, blending tradition and innovation. This original flamenco production bridges cultural influences from both Atlantic shores, showcasing flamenco’s evolution as a global art form.
Premiered in spring 2025 at the third annual Seville’s April Fair in Halifax, the show received an enthusiastic response for its flow, dynamic pacing, and ever-changing moods that kept audiences fully engaged. It is an excellent option for presenters seeking a performance that goes beyond traditional flamenco, weaving in echoes of Nova Scotia’s Celtic roots.
Artistic Vision
Created by Maria Osende, Artistic Director of Atlantic Flamenco, Between Shores celebrates cultural fusion and the evolving language of flamenco.
“Flamenco is a living, evolving art form, born from cultural fusion in Spain. Our lives constantly change, we meet new people, and history unfolds around us—I wanted to create a show that honours these influences.”The music includes pure flamenco as well as fusion, including Celtic elements featuring pieces that reflect the unique artistic backgrounds of the performers.
