Semana Santa

A week long celebration, taking place the week before Easter. Semana Santa is an important religious event, consisting of church masses and street processions. These traditions have been observed throughout Spain since the 16th Century. Communities rehearse their processions and create lavish floats, working for several months every year to prepare.

This year all of the processions have unfortunately been canceled due to the worldwide pandemic.

 

Recipe

For the syrup:

  • Rind of 1/2 lemon
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 3 cloves
  • 1 kg sugar

Para el almibar:

  • Cascara de limón (medio limón)
  • 2 canelas en rama
  • 3 clavos
  • 1 kilo de azúcar ( no se echa entera, es según como vaya quedando el espesor del almíbar junto al agua que será un litro de agua)

 

For the Toast:

  • 1 glass of manzanilla/sherry/fortified dessert wine*
  • 2 glasses of water
  • 4-5 eggs
  • Brioche bread (or two loafs of 2-3 days old white bread, a little hardened)
  • Sunflower oil

 

Ingredientes para la torrija:

  • Un vaso de vino ( manzanilla)
  • 2 vasos de agua
  • 4 huevos aproximadamente
  • Pan de torrija ( en su defecto 2 barras de pan de dos o 3 días, que esté el pan más bien duro)
  • Aceite de girasol un litro
