Take a look our 2023 April Fair

In 2023, Atlantic Flamenco embarked on a landmark project, creating and producing the inaugural Seville’s April Fair in Halifax. This initiative marked a unique adaptation of the internationally renowned fair, brought to life under the creative direction of our Artistic Director.

To generate excitement leading up to the fair, AF hosted two engaging free afternoon events. “Get in the Mood,” held on April 1 at the Aurora North Church Parish in Halifax, featured a Spanish-themed hall with crafts for kids, snacks, a Seville fairground diorama, live music, and a dance and singing workshop. On April 15, the Mic Mac Aquatic Club in Dartmouth set the stage for another lively pre-fair event, “Get Ready for the Feria,” which included the addition of a flamenco flea market.

The main events hosted at the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 were a success and included two performances featuring local flamenco artists Joyce Saunders, Linda Palmer, Karen Staples, Alanna Macintyre and Wendy Bona and guest artists Rosanne Dion, Fernando Gallego and Jose Vega and our artistic director Maria Osende. The event was covered by CTV, Radio Canada and CBC’s National News.

The total attendance surpassed 900, as Halifax embraced the vibrant atmosphere of its first-ever “Seville’s April Fair in Halifax.” Notably, snippets from Sunday’s matinee were featured on CTV, CBC’s National News and Radio Canada, granting national recognition to this cultural celebration.

The success of this event is a testament to the dedication of numerous volunteers and ambassadors who generously contributed their time and energy. Their collaborative efforts made the first Seville’s April Fair in Halifax a resounding success, and we extend our sincere thanks for their invaluable contributions. This achievement truly reflects the spirit and commitment of AF and its community.

Special recognition goes to Rosa Milito from Heritage Workshop Studio, a vital member of our creative team, for her visually captivating venue design. The design captured iconic elements of Seville’s fair, including red and white lanterns, a horse-drawn carriage, and the renowned casetas known for hosting entertainment during the fair.

Grateful for the generous support, AF received funding for the Seville’s April Fair from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Nova Scotia Communities Culture and Heritage. Our event Sponsor for the main event was RBC Wealth Management.

We would particularly like to thank our donors for the incredible support we have received to make the Seville’s April Fair 2024 possible! We are so grateful!
