Multilevel Bulerias Workshop in August 🌹

Our Bulerias workshop started this week.  Students are learning this festive form of flamenco, often referred to as the late-night “kitchen party” music and dance of flamenco. Bulerias are upbeat and playful to dance and play.  This irreverent style thrives on the participation of all present. Playing palmas (clapping) and shouting jaleos (encouragements) builds momentum to help maximize the revelry and is just as important as the music and dance.

Some of our students will be showcasing what they have learned at our Calle Flamenca BBQ Party.

Summer Recap

Our Flamenco Summer hasn’t ended yet!  Take a look at what we’ve done so far.

FODAR – Festival of Dance Annapolis Royal
Studio Showing

The Colour Red (A Work in Progress)

In the afternoon of Friday, July 19 at St. Luke’s Anglican Church Hall.  Maria Osende presented The Colour Red in collaboration with Layne Coleman and Randy Glynn.

Maria revealed that the spark to craft a work centered on her life was ignited by FODAR Artistic Director Randy Glynn. This is not just a piece of work, but the powerful evolution of that initial vision.

An exploration of the temporal effect of artistic creation, The Colour Red  draws its inspiration from Maria’s  experiences throughout her dance career. This performance piece, still evolving, serves as a thought-provoking inquiry into the complexities of time, place, and connection within the realm of art. Central to the piece is the realization of the challenges faced by artists in their quest to forge a direct relationship with their audience, encouraging a direct connection with and understanding of the work and its artists. Every performance resonates differently with each observer, influenced by the unique context in which it is presented—be it cultural, social, or personal.

Interpreters: Maria Osende, Layne Coleman
Direction and Dialogue: Randy Glynn, Layne Coleman

Fiesta de la Bulería de Jerez de la Frontera

A bit of history about the Jerez de la Frontera Bulería Festival:

This Festival has been a beloved fixture in the world of flamenco since its founding in 1967 by the flamencologist Juan de la Plata. Not long after, the local municipal council took over the organization, helping to grow it into one of the most important flamenco events worldwide.

Jerez de la Frontera is one of the true heartlands of flamenco, with the neighborhoods of Santiago and San Miguel standing as proud symbols of authentic flamenco artistry. This region is known for its unique style, rich with that unmistakable gitano influence that gives its flamenco such a special character.

For over 50 years, people from around the world have traveled to Jerez de la Frontera to watch and learn from the talented local artists, many of whom come from the large Romany families of Jerez.
